Backyard Projects Case Study 4

Parents build a secondary dwelling for their child while the latter saves money to buy their own home.

  • For many young people, being able to live with their family at a reduced rent is the only way to save money to eventually purchase their own home. The project provided the child with an affordable yet independent living situation, allowing them to do just that.
  • Once the child is ready to move out , the parents are left with an asset that they can then lease to other tenants or one day move into themselves.
  • By building a secondary dwelling, the parents were able to create a new source of income to support themselves into retirement.
